Children price (8-14 years):
Ice cave and a glacier hike in one tour, it’s the perfect winter combination. On this extra small group tour we’ll explore the majestic ice formations and visit a naturally formed ice cave on one of Vatnajökull’s many outlet glaciers.
Note: At this time it is impossible to say which ice caves we will visit in the winter 2020-21, but we always try our absolute best to stay away from the large bus groups that are operated by the other companies in the area. Either by finding our own separate cave or timing our visits so no people are in the cave. The photos on this page are from the caves we have visited in the area during the last few years. This page will be updated late September when the caves have been formed and we know what will be available to us.
Ice caves are naturally made phenomenon created during the warmer months of the year by flowing meltwater from the glacier. Sometimes ice caves can be formed in the same locations for many years in a row while others just stay for a few weeks or months. Beautiful blue ice caves that are also stable and safe are quite rare and therefore the ones that are easier to access can be overcrowded. We want to avoid the big crowds so we always try our absolute best to visit the caves when nobody else is there.
This ice cave and glacier hike tour starts at the Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center. There you will meet your certified glacier guide and get all the necessary information and glacier equipment. The terminal is the last place to grab any snacks, drinks or use the restrooms before going to the glacier. After a little introduction we will step into our modified Land Rover Defender and drive through the beautiful area that Öræfi has to offer. With our modified trucks we are usually able to drive further into the glacier valleys than others, therefore giving us more time to spend on the actual ice. After the short drive it’s time to walk by the glacier edge to the spot you will strap on your crampons. Your glacier guide will explain how to wear and use the glacier equipment, as well as do a quick safety briefing.
Conditions on the glacier are ever changing so no ice cave tour or glacier hike is the same. Sometimes the caves are formed at the edge of the glacier, while other times we need to hike into the glacier to reach it. Therefore it is never certain if we start the tour by visiting the ice cave or with the glacier hike. During the glacier hike we will enter into the magical ice world, exploring crevasses, moulins and as much blue ice as possible.
