Children price (8-14 years):
If you have never seen a glacier before and you would like to experience these stunning ice giants up close, then this is the perfect tour for you. On this 3-hour family friendly glacier tour, you will explore the beautiful ice formations on the Falljökull outlet glacier, which is a part of Europe’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull.
Like with all our tours, the meeting point is at Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center. There we will provide you with glacier-hiking gear, such as crampons, harness, and ice axe. Then, we will step into our modified 4×4 truck and drive through the majestic scenery towards the Falljökull outlet glacier. This surrounding area offers stunning views and has served as the filming location for many blockbusters, such as “Batman Begins,” “Interstellar,” and the TV series “Game of Thrones.” Then, as we get closer to the glacier, we will start driving through the rugged terrain that was previously shaped by the glacier. Upon arrival, your licensed guide will explain how to wear and use the provided gear before stepping onto the ice. Now you are ready to start exploring the beautiful crevasses, moulins, and other features and formations on the glacier! While hiking, your guide will explain how glaciers are formed and behave, as well as other interesting facts about the area. For this tour, we always aim to spend a minimum of 1.5 hours on the ice itself, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent views and take plenty of photos to bring this experience back home with you.
- Small group experience (max 8 persons).
- 4×4 transport to and from the glacier.
- An English speaking, certified glacier guide.
- Glacier gear (crampons, harness and an ice axe)
- Hiking boots, preferably with ankle support (can be rented on location for 1.000 ISK)
- Warm, waterproof clothing (depending on weather).
- Sun glasses
Minimum age for the Skaftafell 3 hour glacier hike is 8 years old. Children must fit shoes in size 34 eu.
On this 3 hour tour we don’t go as far into the glacier as we do on the glacier adventure, usually it’s around 5 km on this tour vs 7-10 on the adventure tour. On this tour we will not have to do any climbing or rope work which may be required in the glacier adventure tour.
When it is an extremely sunny and bright day the reflection of the ice can be a bit painful for the eyes. So we strongly reccommend bringing a pair if it is sunny.
We don’t stop for lunch on this tour as time does not allow it, but we reccommend bringing a bottle of water and a little snack, like an energy bar with you.

Greatest glacier experience
I have booked Melrakki adventures with my sister following some friends’ advice and we had the greatest adventure ever. Starting at 9:00am we were the first group (of 3!) on the glacier, so we had it for ourselves. The hike was fantastic, Katerina (our guide) gave us tips, stories, explanations and fun facts about this unique place. We could feel her passion for her work and her philosophy about being environment respectful and careful. I can only recommend them….
You won't get lost in a crowd!
Choose Melrakki Adventures and enjoy a more intimate tailored tour with Katerina and Oddur who are extremely attentive and kind. Katerina led the tour and she was fantastically knowledgable teaching us the history of the area (and we learn’t some Icelandic words along the way). We were the first on the glacier for the day so we luxuriated in having the area to ourselves for a while. Find out what it means to take a Viking refreshment, touch 300+ year old ice and observe volcanic rock. If you don’t want to get lost in a big crowd then Melrakki tours are for you!
Glacier walk with Melrakki Adventures was the best!
This glacier walk experience was the best thing we did in Iceland (and we did a lot). First, our guide, Katerina, drove us through a 4×4 trail (in a Land Rover Defender) to the very foot of the glacier. We passed all of the other tour groups on their long walk from the parking lot. Then, since we were a small, personalized group, we got to go very far up on the glacier. Katerina made sure to stop and take lots of pictures with my camera. She also taught us a lot about the glacier and about Iceland. Great experience! I would do this again in a second, but only with Melrakki!
