If you have never seen a glacier before and you would like to experience these stunning ice giants up close, then this is the perfect tour for you. On this 3-hour family friendly glacier tour, you will explore the beautiful ice formations on the Falljökull outlet glacier, which is a part of Europe’s largest ice cap, Vatnajökull.
Like with all our tours, the meeting point is at Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center. There we will provide you with glacier-hiking gear, such as crampons, harness, and ice axe. Then, we will step into our modified 4×4 truck and drive through the majestic scenery towards the Falljökull outlet glacier. This surrounding area offers stunning views and has served as the filming location for many blockbusters, such as “Batman Begins,” “Interstellar,” and the TV series “Game of Thrones.” Then, as we get closer to the glacier, we will start driving through the rugged terrain that was previously shaped by the glacier. Upon arrival, your licensed guide will explain how to wear and use the provided gear before stepping onto the ice. Now you are ready to start exploring the beautiful crevasses, moulins, and other features and formations on the glacier! While hiking, your guide will explain how glaciers are formed and behave, as well as other interesting facts about the area. For this tour, we always aim to spend a minimum of 1.5 hours on the ice itself, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent views and take plenty of photos to bring this experience back home with you.
Minimum age for the Skaftafell 3 hour glacier hike is 8 years old. Children must fit shoes in size 34 eu.
On this 3 hour tour we don’t go as far into the glacier as we do on the glacier adventure, usually it’s around 2-4 km on this tour vs 4-6 km on the adventure tour. On this tour we will not have to do any climbing or rope work which may be done on the glacier adventure tour.
When it is an extremely sunny and bright day the reflection of the ice can be a bit painful for the eyes. So we strongly reccommend bringing a pair if it is sunny.
We don’t stop for lunch on this tour as time does not allow it, but we reccommend bringing a bottle of water and a little snack, like an energy bar with you.
Most likely not. We do have a seperate ice cave and glacier hike tour that we operate in the winter. If there are any caves/tunnels in the area that we do the hike, we always try to stop there as well in this tour.
