Note (Oct. 2020): Due to the current situation there is no helicopter in the area, and this tour is unavailable until further notice.
This is probably the most exclusive ice cave tour you can find in Iceland this season. It starts with 10 minute helicopter flight over Vatnajökull National Park, Europe’s largest glacier. You will land on outlet glacier Skeiðarárjökull. Then it’s time to explore the massive ice caves hidden inside of the glacier.
The tour starts at Skaftafell Terminal Tour Center, where you will meet your certified glacier guide and helicopter pilot. After safety briefing, you will head to the helicopter. You will be flying over the glacial riverbeds with a view over Skaftafell National Park to the vast glacier tongue of Skeiðarárjökull, biggest outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. After the approximately 10 minute flight you will land at the foot of the glacier. In that area there are numerous ice caves from which the most beautiful ones are about 5 minutes walking distance. The largest cave there is known as the Blue Dragon Cave and is approximately 400 meters long with very high ceilings giving you feeling almost like inside of a cathedral. You will have plenty of time (around 2 hours) to explore and photograph the ice caves. After that we will hike back to the helicopter and fly back over the glacier and riverbeds to Skaftafell Tour Center. Optional add-on to this tour is to extend the flight time for a more grand experience. The flight is operated by our partners at Atlantsflug.
